Our speakers

Philip is an investment specialist in the Clients Department. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2021, having previously worked at Capital Group, where he was a global equity investment specialist. Prior to joining Capital, Philip worked as a fund research analyst at Chelsea. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Loughborough University. He also holds the Investment Management Certificate and Chartered Financial Analyst® designation.

Matthew is an investment manager in the Japanese Equities Team. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2003 and became a partner in 2018. He is manager of the Japanese Fund (and related All Cap Strategy segregated accounts), manager of the Baillie Gifford Japan Trust and co-manager of the Japanese Income Growth Fund. Matthew graduated BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences (Psychology) from the University of Cambridge in 2000 and holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Bristol.

Qian is an investment specialist within the Emerging Markets Client Team. She joined Baillie Gifford in 2021. Previously, Qian worked as a senior client portfolio manager covering emerging markets strategies at Pictet Asset Management and JPMorgan Asset Management. She began her career at Merrill Lynch in 2008. Qian graduated MSc in Mathematical Risk Management from Georgia State University and BSc in Economics and Statistics from Peking University. Qian is a native mandarin speaker and a CFA Charterholder.

Cherry has over 20 years’ experience working for a range of national, consumer and trade titles including The Times, the Financial Times, Telegraph, Independent, Interactive Investor, Forbes and the Investors Chronicle. She has co-authored a book on investing in emerging markets and is six-time winner of the Investment Management Association’s freelance journalist of the year award and eight-time winner of the AIC Freelance journalist of the year award. She began her career as a tax accountant for PricewaterhouseCoopers, before moving to investment bank J.P. Morgan.
